                    Part of our history timelines. The main point being our understanding and adaptation. This video is about the history of recent climate change and our present view of global warming. Our present widespread understanding of the occurrence and result of climate change began in about 1900. So we knew about it in 1900. By 1950 we knew that there was a need for us to adapt in order to thrive and probably to survive. By 1960 we knew that climate change could happen much more quickly than many had thought and to talk more strongly about our need to adapt to reality more rapidly. From that time onward much "official" monitoring of climate change began along with a more careful study of its history.

1886 AD to 1930 AD

1886 AD to 1930 AD: A history timeline not quite like others. It includes: US wars, Mexico, Haiti, American Indians, Soviet Union, Sioux, Michigan, earthquakes, unions, and more added monthly.

 
 
1887 AD, March 4th: The United Brewery Workers were founded this day.

~ US forces invaded Mexico.

~ Ted Daniels and Helen Miller became Nettie Daniels parents.

1874 AD, the 12thof May: Helena Pauline Miller(Helen Miller) was born among Balts in  towns called Litzberg, Lutenberg, and Jablon perhaps in a Germany that had recently been Prussia. Helen died on the 21st of  November in 1930. She was the daughter of Julius Miller(may once have been Muller)and Mary Gozelski/Goczwelski/Zgozelski.
~ Helena Pauline's parents were Julius Miller and  Mary Gozelski/Zgozelski/Goczwelski of my mother's maternal line.

1887 AD, March 4th: The United Brewery Workers were founded this day.

~ US forces invaded Mexico.

1892 AD, June 30th, USA: Steel strike at Carnegie Steel began.

~ USA: New Orleans general strike began.

1893 AD, USA: My maternal grandmother was born in Michigan on the 18th day of September of this year. She was named Nettie Anastacia Daniels. Daniels seems to be the simplification of Danielewski. She died on the 23rd day of  May of 1963 in los Angeles, California. she was the daughter of Theodore Theophile (Teofil) Daniels/Danielewski(Danieluski?) and Helen Miller. I knew Nettie Daniels as Grama.

~ November, USA: The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers was established.

~ California, USA: Warren  well near Yucca Valley was out of commission for about a month after a series of severe earthquakes occured.

~ TchaiKovsky composed his Symphonie Pathetique.

1894 AD, USA: The Kellogg Brothers created a breakfast food industry when they developed a flake cereal at their Battle Creek Sanitarium.
 
 


~ 1897 AD to 1975 AD: Life span of Chiang Kai-shek. He was an influential leader of the Kuomintang (KMT) and a close ally of Sun Yat-sen. Chaing led the KMT following the death of Sun in 1925. In 1928 Chaing led the Northern Expedition to unify the country becoming China's overall leader. During the war with Japan, Chaing's Nationalist Government was severely weakened allowing the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to gain the upper hand in the long standing civil war.

~ US: My sister, Gerry Hook, tells me that my paternal grandmother, Josephine Sophia Helwick/Helvik was born on May 29th of this year in Chicago, Cook county, Illinois. She died December the 8th of 1961 in Palm Springs, California. She was the daughter of Karl Magnus Andreassen Helvik and Karen Andersdtr/Andersen.

~ April 15th: A Phillip Randolph, trade unionist, and civil-rights leader was born this date. He was the founding president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Randolph began organizing that group of black workers when the AF of L barred lack members.

1890 AD to 1961 AD: The life span of my paternal grandmother. my sister, Gerry Hook, tells me that Josephine Sophia Helwick/Helvik was born on May 29th in Chicago, Cook county, IL. ~ November, USA: The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers was founded.

~ USA, California: Many Cahuilla people took part in an Indian Uprising. That was only 61 years before I knew them. I believe that was the last Indian uprising on the Southern California desert. I wonder if a spirit of Cabezon knew.

~ USA: The Federal Forest Reserve System was set up.

1892 AD: Johnson County War, US forces invade Mexico.

 

1893 AD: US: Nettie Daniels, my maternal grandmother, was born on the 18th of September of this year. and became one of the better influences on my early life. She was born in the US state of Michigan. I called her "Grama," and knew her name was Nettie Daniels, but her full name was Nettie Anastasia Danielewski/Daniels. She was the daughter and eldest child of Theodore/Theophile/Teofil/Ted Danielewski/Daniels and Helen Miller (Muller?). Nettie Daniels died in Los Angeles, California in 1963.

~ Severe earthquakes: Warren Well, near Yucca Valley, California, was out of commission for about a month after a series of severe earthquakes.                                                    

~ On November of this year the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers was established (re-established?) 

1893 AD: Sir Henry Head, a British nerve specialist, noticed that suffers of diseased gallbladders and kidneys felt pain at parts of the body far from the stricken organs. The pain was on the surface of the skin, and a specific disease always resulted in pain at the same place! "Always" makes for a sure diagnosis. Specialists in Europe and the US were trained in Head Zone diagnostics. Reminds me of acupuncture.

His theoretical contribution to Marxist-Leninism, military strategies, and his brand of Communist policies are collectively known as Maoism.

~ to 1976 is the lifespan of Lin Yutang: Chinese writer of a wide variety of works, many written in English and more translated to English. Inventor, linguist, novelist, philosopher, and translator. He has been said to straddle East and West.

~ France: Motion pictures presented publicly on a screen for the first time by A. L. Lumiere in Paris.

~ Austria: Sigmund Freud published first works on psychoanalysis.

~ Luis Pasteur develops rabies vaccine to "cure" hydrophobia. 

~ India: It is said that Lahiri Mahasaya entered Mahasamadhi in Banaras on September 26th of this year and that he said shortly before his death that "A 50 years after my passing, an account of my life well be written because of a deep interest in yoga will arise in the west." See Paramahansa Yogananda.

   

1896 AD:US forces invade Mexico.

~ Radioactivity: Discovered and, among other things, lead to the development of geological applications through radiometric dating during the first half of the 20th century. 

~ USA: International Union of Operating Engineers was founded.

~ California, USA: The first school in the state is said to have been established at what is now California Hot springs.

1897 AD to 1901 AD: Republican, William McKinley was assassinated in office as U.S. President.

~ October: The International Brotherhood of Blacksmiths was founded.

1897 AD: The US did not war this year. No major war by US.

 

1898 AD, USA wars: Spanish-American War, Battle of Leech Lake, Chippewa Indian disturbances.

~ North America: U.S. and Canadian workers launched Western Labor Union.

~ January 29th, USA: International Brotherhood of Teamsters was founded.

~ November, U.S.A: The International Federation of Postal Clerks was founded. 

1899 AD to 1934 AD: The US engaged in Banana Wars, but did busy themselves with a few others such as the Philippine-American war.

1900 AD: English and French agree on Siamese independence. Thailand.

~ William James published Pragmatism.

~ Baden-Powell founded the Boy Scout movement.

~ The first daily newspaper comic is run on the San Francisco Chronicle as "Mr. Mutt." It later became "Mutt and Jeff."-

1901 AD to 1909 AD: Republican, Theodor Roosevelt was US Pres.

~ to 1917 AD: The life span of Lenin, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (Ulanov). He learned much from Marx, but seems to have rejected the "peoples democracy" of Marx.

~ USA: Hayany date was introduced in the Country.

~ to 1987 AD: (?) Bayard Rustin didn't carry did not carry King in a basket, but damn near. Rustin was a pacifist agitator. He Organized Southern christian Leadership Conference and the March on Washington!!!!

1906 AD, US: The Salton Sea of California is recorded at 195 feet below sea level.

1907 AD: My paternal grandparents marry on January 16th. Joseph Carroll Sheehan took Josephine Sophia Helwick to wife. My father, Carroll Joseph Sheehan, Was the first of the four children of that union. Joseph Carroll was the son of M.(Mago)William Sheehan and Mary J. Carroll.

1910 AD: US continues war against Philippine people and Central American people. This record is getting tiresome.

1911 AD: US Wars mostly the same.

~ March 25th, USA: 146 women workers killed in New York clothing factory fire. Did this have anything to do with someone's dislike for worker organization?

1912 AD, Ireland: Third Home Rule Bill.

~ China: The Qing Dynasty fell. After years of corruption a series of natural disasters and famines civil war started and led to the fall of the dynasty. Rebellion and unrest continued until Chinese Nationalist and Chinese Communist arose as the two major apposing forces.

~ US: Mago William Sheehan, my great grandfather died this year being about 73 years of age.

~ The same US force in foreign lands.

~ January 11th, USA: 10,000 textile workers strike in Lawrence, Mass. To strike is basically to refuse to labor for another done in an organized group. A sit-down strike is offensive.The strikers in this case won.

~ England: Annie Besant, Madame Blansky founded, in London, the Order of the Temple of the Rose-Cross.

~ April 18th, USA: West Virginia Coal Miners strike resulted in a clash with the National Guard. What was the nature of this strike that made them subject to violence?

~ May 26th, USA: The Actors Equity Association was founded.

~ USA: Remaining Indians at 29 Palms, California moved to the Morongo Reservation.

1914 AD to 1918 AD: The world was having WWI,  Russia was our allie.

~ Ireland: Implementation of Home Rule postponed because of the outbreak of World War One.

~ World: Outbreak  of World War I.

~ Ireland: IRB decides on Rising.

~ December, USA: The Clothing Workers of America was established.

~ WWI broke out in Europe.

~ USA: Ludlow Massacre: 29 coal miners were killed by police in Colorado.

~ to 1918 AD: Duration of WWI.

~ Czarist Russia enters WWI on the side of the "Allies."

1915 AD: The union organizer, Joe Hill, was hanged in Salt Lake City. Do you know the song? We still sing of Joe from time to time.

~ US Colorado - Paiute war.

~ On August 7th of this year my mother, Dorothy Cecilia Sheehan was born in the city of Wayne County, Michigan. She was the daughter of Richard Johnson* and Nettie Lucille Daniels/Danielewski.  

1916 AD to 1934 AD: U.S. Banana wars mostly in Central America.

~ US continues the invasion of Mexico until 1919. 

~ Ireland: May 3rd, 12 executions lead to Easter Rising in Dublin. After leaders are executed, public opinion backs independence.

~ USA: The National Park Service was created to preserve the National Parks and Monuments for our enjoyment.

1917 AD: USA: On June 26th of this year an I.W.W. strike was called at copper mines near Bisbee, Arizona. strikers were deported by sheriff Wheeler. 

~ Houston, Texas: Large race riot is said to have been sparked by the  Houston police against black soldiers, officers, and civilians. There was fighting between black military of Camp Logan and Houston police. Tell me the story,

~ US: In California at the Salton Sea. Seining of mullet became a profitable industry in the USA during WWI. Mullet Island at the south end of the Sea and nearby mud pots became popular tourist attractions.

~ US initiates Banana Wars, invades Mexico, and fights WW I.

~ USA: Bisbee, Arizona: On June 26th the I.W.W. was called at called at copper mines. Strikers were deported by sheriff Wheeler. IWW is the Industrial Workers of the World.

~ Ireland: De Valera won election in East Clare.

~ De Valera was an Irish leader from 1917 to 1973 and founded Fianna Fail, Warriors of Fail.

~  USA, Arizona, Bisbee ,June 26th: The I.W.W. strike was called at copper mines near Bisbee. Strikers were deported by sheriff Wheeler.

1918 AD: US continues Banana Wars and invasion of Mexico as it fights WW I.

~ Russia withdrew from the war, WWI, with the signing of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. The announcement of the Treaty angered the Allies and resulted in an invasion of north-western Russia to retrieve arms supplied to tsarist Russia and given to aid the Whites.

~ The Ukraine became the Cossack republic. 

~ In November of this year the First World War ended.

~ World: The Spanish Flue pandemic lasted 3 years. Death data is inadequate in part of because the governments U.S., France, Germany, and England lied to their people. The Spanish government was more forthcoming. Deaths may have been between 17 and 100 million. Death rate for children was greater than expected. The Spanish flu is likely to have begun in the US. China was little affected.

~ February 26th: USA: The International Association of Fire Fighters was established.

~ October, USA: The First National Conference of Women Trade Unionist met.

~ An influenza virus pandemic, called the Spanish Flue occurred. It killed perhaps 30,000,000 people worldwide, many in the prime and healthiest years of life.

~ March 30th, USA: Stockyard workers won a ten hour work day.

1919 AD: US continues Banana Wars and invasion of Mexico.

~ Irish War of Independence against Britain. 

~ Communist International (Comintern) formed in Moscow. It evolved from being an independent international organization to being a Soviet sponsored organization coordinating revolutionary overthrow of capitalism worldwide

~ China: Marxism was spreading in China by this time.

~ August, USA: United Mine Workers organizer, Fannie Sanlins, was killed by police in Philadelphia.

~ September, USA: Boston police strike began.

~ Spanish Influenza epidemic killed about 20,000,000 worldwide.

~ February 2nd: 16,000 slik works refused to work.

~ Founding of the Communal International (Communtern).

~ USA: Earl "Curly" Lambeau founded the Green Bay Packers football team organization.

~ A general strike began in Seattle, Washington. There is a very great deal to learn about a general strike.

1920 AD: The end of the Little Ice Age.

~ US continues Banana Wars.

~ 1930 AD, 1948, 1964, 2020 The people of the US continue to change the way they think about the Mound Culture. By 1920 the Mounds had become a destination for the wealthy.

~ USA: In large part due to the Detroit auto industry, the mounds, from the mouth of the Mississippi to the Ohio river valley became a destination for the wealthy. The "mounds" are those earthen works of a number of similar similar cultures connected by commerce and stretching back to the time of megafauna.

~ Ireland: Burning of Cork by Auxiliaries.

~ Ireland: Civil War starts between The Free State army and the IRA.

~ USA: Virginia Marie Brennan was born in Michigan on September 15th.

~ China: The Comintern sent Grigori Voitinsky to China to firmly establish the Communist Party there.

~ USA: In large part due to Detroit and the auto industry, the ancient mounds from the mouth of the Mississippi, up that river to above the Ohio river and along the Ohio river, became important tourist attractions.

~ The American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU, was founded this year lead by Roger Baldwin. From the beginning that union defended the expression of beliefs of aliens, the organizing rights of the IWW, and the expression of anti war

1925 AD, Scotland: Television was "invented" by John Logie Baird.

~ USA: The frozen food process was developed by C. Birdseye.

~ USA: The Scopes Case. When Tennessee new anti evolution law (?) became effective in March of this year the ACLU at once sought a test of the statute. They saw it as an attack on free speech and secured John T Scopes as a plaintiff. Thus the Scopes Trial.Free speech was sustained, but not everyone was happy.

1927 AD, USA: Medjool date plants were brought to this country from Dou Denib oasis in French Morocco by Dr. Walter T Swingle of the US Department of Agriculture. Not everyone was happy.

~ England: Mrs. C. F. Leyel founded the Society of Herbalists in London and opened Culpeper's herbal shop.

~ US: A great flood occurred on the Mississippi River.

1921 AD: US continues Banana Wars.

~  December: Anglo Irish Treaty between Britain and Ireland led to the creation of the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland. An "Ïrish Free State" was established

~ Russia: The New Economic Policy was proposed by Lenin to prevent the Russian economy from collapsing. The new policy required farmers to pay a specific amount of raw agricultural goods as a tax in kind. Under the NEP the state, controlled banks, foreign trade, and large industries, while allowing some private ventures, which permitted small business and shops to reopen.

1874 AD: On May 12th of this year Helena Pauline Miller was born where there were Balts in the Litzburg, Lutenberg, Jablon area of what was Prussia. She was my maternal great grandmother. She was the daughter of Julius Miller and Mary Gozelski/Gocwelski. She died the 21st day of of November of 1030.

~ January 10th to December 27th 1934 AD, Charles Lamb: Spent 6 weeks in a madhouse. He was an accountant for 33 years for the East India Company. His sister killed their mother when he was 24 and she was 36. He cared for here after that, but she outlived him by ten years. This Lamb was and English essayist, poet and antiquarian. He wrote the children's book Tales from Shakespeare with his sister Mary Lamb.

~ USA, July: First national railroad strike began. Over 140 workers killed by authorities this July, mostly in Pennsylvania.

~ USA, June: 11 striking coal miner were hanged in Pennsylvania this June without authority. Were things improving or not.

~ USA, June 21st, This was the time of the summer solstice. The longest day and shortest night of the year. It has been called a day of healing. I wonder how much it healed the families of the railroad workers families.

~ to 1953 AD: Joseph Stalin lived. He was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death in 1953. After the assassination of Lenin in Mexico he rose to become the leader of the Soviet Union.

1879 AD, US: Cheyenne war, Sheepeater Indian war, White River war, U.S. forces invade Mexico.

~ to 1940 AD: Leon Trotsky lived. He led the Bolshevik revolution with Lenin. Many believed he would succeed Lenin. Trotsky was instrumental in negotiating the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. He was one of the first members of the Politburo.

~ Ireland: Threat of famine. Evictions. Irish National League founded.

~ USA: Marked the opening of the California Electric Light Co. It may be the first such company to sell electric services to the public.

~ USA, October: Marks the month and year of the American labor organizer, song writer, and poet, Joe Hill was born.

~ The Great Southern Comet had a 50 degree long tail and a magnitude of about 6. The comet was very easily observed  in Australia in daylight hours.

~ This year through the Smithsonian came an official description of the mound builder culture. There have been updates.

 

1881 AD, US: The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners was organized on August 8th in the Trades Assembly Hall in Chicago.

~ US: The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers was organized in Chicago's Trades Assembly Hall.

~ USA: Martin Carroll Sheehan died. He  was borne in county Kerry, Ireland ca 1810.

 

1883 AD: Irish Laborer's Act. Canon Sheehan took advantage of this Act to pursue a plan to have all cabins demolished and replaced by a modern housing plan. Such social acts were recounted in Canon Sheehan's in his popular novel My New Curate.

~ Across the Plains and the Amateur Emigrant are works by Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson relating to his 1880 crossing of the U.S. to marry Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne.

~ Great Britain:  R L Stevenson lived from 1850 to 1894 (?) and is writer of Treasure Island and other works.

~ My paternal grandfather, Joseph Carroll Sheehan, was born this year and died in 1940. Dates are correct to within about two years.

~ Something about the Ashburne Land Purchase Acts relate to one Canon Shehan who wrote his name Sheehan. He also wrote Free Thought in America which was published in the Irish Ecclesiastical Record. I seem to remember that the Canon wrote a great deal more and that it was published beyond the Record. Strange, writing some of this stuff about Ireland raise a great deal of strong feelings in me.

~ California, USA: Bill Keys was told that not long before this time that Yucca Valley looked like a wheat field with grass three feet high and that there were numerus antelope.

~ May 1st, U.S.: 350,000 workers demonstrated for the 8 hour work Day. Perhaps effected the feeling for May Day in the Republic.

~ January 13th, U.S.: Bakery and Confection Workers International was founded.

~ to 1957 AD, Mexico: Was the lifespan of Diego Rivera, the Mexican artist.

~ U.S.: Geronimo, the last Apache war chief, surrendered to General Nelson Miles.

~ December, U.S.: The America Federation of Labor was founded in Columbus, Ohio. The "AFofL" Was one of the greatest US unions formed to this date, perhaps the greatest.
