1843 AD: Samuel Morse transmitted the first telegraph message.
 

 1844 AD: On or about this year my my maternal great great grandfather was born. He was the father of Theodore Daniels.

1845 AD, Ireland: The Great Famine. 

1845 AD: Ireland: Blight in the potato harvest.

1846 AD, Ireland: Charles Stewart Parnell born on July 27th at Avondale House died in the United Kingdom October 6th 1841. 

1846 AD: Ireland: April. Trevelyan opens depots for sale of Indian corn, but closes them later in summer. Repeal of corn laws.

~ July. Lord John Russell replaces Peel as PM.

~ Ireland, August: Total failure of potato harvest. The potato famine was reaching its height. It's tough to run out of potatoes when that is all there is. Luckily we had grass.

~ Ireland, October: First deaths from starvation. By 1851 about a million children, women, and men had died of famine in that little country.

~ 1848 AD to 1849 AD: Through emigration and deaths by famine, Ireland's population decreased by more than 2 million people!

~ Ireland: Insurrection in Tipperary is put down. Can you sing "It's a Long Way to Go to Tipperary?"

~ Europe: Wide-spread worker revolts here.

~ US: We stopped killing Mexicans to get a great big part of California and New Mexico. We also signed the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo with Mexico.


~ US: Some rushed to California for gold, even a few Chileans and a couple of Irishmen and Chinese too.

~ to 1849 AD, Ireland: Through emigration and way to many by famine, Ireland's population decreased by more than 2 million of this very small island nation. Now the Irish people's land again. May they hold it dearly.

1850s AD: Legal Irish immigrants to the U.S. numbered about a million. They were not well accepted. Some turned to gangs or crime. Many turned to city politics, labor unions, and the Roman Catholic Church.

~ Tenant Right League formed in Ireland to demand reform to the land law of Ireland. This organization and demand was followed by about 40 years of unrest in Ireland.

~  to 1917 AD, Italy: Lifespan of Saint Francis Xavier Cabrini. She founded 67 orphanages, schools, and hospitals throughout the world. She was born on a farm in Lombardy. At first she was rejected from entering a convent because of poor health.

~ USA: Harriet Beecher Stone's Uncle Tom's Cabin was published.

1852 AD:Mary Zgorzelski/Goczewski was born this year in Litzberg, Poland or Jablon, Germany in what was probably Prussia. She was married in time to Theodore Daniels/Danielewski. She died July 9th 1915 in Detroit, Wayne county, MI.  She is my mothers maternal grandmother and my maternal great grandmother.

~ to 1930 AD: Mark the lifespan of Theodore/Theophile Danielewski(my maternal great grandfather) was born near Prussian Litzberg and Jablon where their may have been some struggle between Germany and Poland. He died in Detroit, Michigan, USA on May 12th of 1930. He married Hellena Miller in, I suspect, 1892. His father, my great, great grandfather was, I believe, Frank Danielewski.
1869 AD: Ted Daniels was born this year. He married Helena Pauline Miller. Nettie Daniels was their eldest daughter. I believe that Julius Miller was Helena's father. He was born in a Prussia that soon became a part of Germany. His parents birth was also Prussia, but I believe they spoke Polish  I believe that Helena's mother was Mary Miller whom I believe was  German and who's name had been Mueller. I believe Mary was Prussian and I am not sure of the nationality and language of her parents.

1874 AD: On May 12th of this year Helena Pauline Miller was born where there were Balts in the Litzburg, Lutenberg, Jablon area of what was Prussia. She was my maternal great grandmother. She was the daughter of Julius Miller and Mary Gozelski/Gocwelski. She died the 21st day of of November of 1030.

~ January 10th to December 27th 1934 AD, Charles Lamb: Spent 6 weeks in a madhouse. He was an accountant for 33 years for the East India Company. His sister killed their mother when he was 24 and she was 36. He cared for here after that, but she outlived him by ten years. This Lamb was and English essayist, poet and antiquarian. He wrote the children's book Tales from Shakespeare with his sister Mary Lamb.

~ USA, June: 11 striking coal miner were hanged in Pennsylvania this June without authority. Were things improving or not.
~ USA, June 21st, This was the time of the summer solstice. The longest day and shortest night of the year. It has been called a day of healing. I wonder how much it healed the families of the railroad workers families.
 
1878 AD: Paiute Indian conflict, Bannock war, Cheyenne war, Lincoln county war, U.S. forces invade Mexico.
~ to 1953 AD: Joseph Stalin lived. He was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death in 1953. After the assassination of Lenin in Mexico he rose to become the leader of the Soviet Union.
~ USA, Philadelphia: Union. Workingman's Party was formed.
 
1879 AD, US: Cheyenne war, Sheepeater Indian war, White River war, U.S. forces invade Mexico.

~ to 1940 AD: Leon Trotsky lived. He led the Bolshevik revolution with Lenin. Many believed he would succeed Lenin. Trotsky was instrumental in negotiating the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. He was one of the first members of the Politburo.
~ Ireland: Threat of famine. Evictions. Irish National League founded.

~ USA: Marked the opening of the California Electric Light Co. It may be the first such company to sell electric services to the public.
~ USA, October: Marks the month and year of the American labor organizer, song writer, and poet, Joe Hill was born.
~ USA: Foundation year of the Foundation of the Societus Rosicruciana in the US. 
 
1880 AD to 1884 AD: U.S. forces continue to invade Mexico.
~Sitka Alaska hurricane.
~ Atlantic hurricane season ran through summer and fall.
~ Oregon: Great gale near the mouth of the Columbia river.
~ The Great Southern Comet had a 50 degree long tail and a magnitude of about 6. The comet was very easily observed  in Australia in daylight hours.
~ This year through the Smithsonian came an official description of the mound builder culture. There have been updates.
 
1881 AD, US: The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners was organized on August 8th in the Trades Assembly Hall in Chicago.
~ US: The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers was organized in Chicago's Trades Assembly Hall.
~ USA: Martin Carroll Sheehan died. He  was borne in county Kerry, Ireland ca 1810.
 
1883 AD: Irish Laborer's Act. Canon Sheehan took advantage of this Act to pursue a plan to have all cabins demolished and replaced by a modern housing plan. Such social acts were recounted in Canon Sheehan's in his popular novel My New Curate.
~ Across the Plains and the Amateur Emigrant are works by Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson relating to his 1880 crossing of the U.S. to marry Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne.
~ Great Britain:  R L Stevenson lived from 1850 to 1894 (?) and is writer of Treasure Island and other works.

~ October: Eleanor Roosevelt was born. She was an American diplomate, an author, and wife of president of FDR.
~ Pope Leo XIII condemned secular Freemasonry.
 
1885 AD, USA wars: Apache wars, Eastern Nevada expedition, U.S. forces invade Mexico.
~ My paternal grandfather, Joseph Carroll Sheehan, was born this year and died in 1940. Dates are correct to within about two years.
~ Something about the Ashburne Land Purchase Acts relate to one Canon Shehan who wrote his name Sheehan. He also wrote Free Thought in America which was published in the Irish Ecclesiastical Record. I seem to remember that the Canon wrote a great deal more and that it was published beyond the Record. Strange, writing some of this stuff about Ireland raise a great deal of strong feelings in me.

~ to 1957 AD, Mexico: Was the lifespan of Diego Rivera, the Mexican artist.
~ U.S.: Geronimo, the last Apache war chief, surrendered to General Nelson Miles.
